Oktoberfest is Coming!
Oktoberfest is a 16 day festival held annually in Munich, Germany, with this year’s celebration starting September 18th and running through October 4th. The festival is the world’s largest fair, drawing more than six million people each year. While about two thirds of attendees hail from Germany, visitors descend upon Oktoberfest from surrounding European countries, as well as North and South America, Asia, Africa and Australia.
Oktoberfest is best known for participants drinking copious amounts of beer, and for good reason. Six million liters of beer are typically consumed each year, from local German breweries like Paulaner, Löwenbräu, Hacker-Pschorr, Hofbräu and Spaten. But more than just beer, Oktoberfest is a celebration of German culture and also includes traditional German foods like sausages, pretzels, roast pork and potato dumplings, as well as German music to entertain attendees throughout the day.
If you can’t make it to Munich this year, don’t fret; Oktoberfest celebrations go on all over the world. And while none rival the sheer size and scope of the original, grab your lederhosen, because there’s sure to be plenty of beer and festivities in a city near you.
