Mumbai Gets Some Good News
After the terrorist attacks in Mumbai (late November 2008), the city has most certainly suffered from a decrease in tourism.
Seeing a city under attack on television for a few days will leave many cancelling their travel plans.
While it's good to consider the risks involved in our travels, it's even easier nowadays to over estimate the risks.
So last week, when millions were glued to their televisions watching the Oscar® Awards, it was nice to see the big winner on the night be "Slumdog Millionaire," a film about a young man from Mumbai. The film was nominated for 10 awards, and won 8, including Best Picture and Best Director.
The awards won't restore Mumbai's tourism industry overnight, but it will surely serve as a helpful boost. It's nice to see Mumbai get some positive press, after a couple months of the negative headlines.
One of the unfortunate things about travel today, is that we are bombarded with headlines and at times negative press about a city or country, and some of us then choose not to travel there, because of these headlines. It's unfortunate, because in reality, every day there is both good and bad news from every country on the planet.
While I always recommend that you travel safely, and don't visit parts of the world that are in turmoil, I also believe that you should not let your imagination get the best of you.
