The 30 metre statue of Jesus that overlooks the city of Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, is officially called Christ the Redeemer. It's perched atop the Corcovado Mountain peak, located about 700 metres above sea level. The monument for Brazil is of significant historical importance, and could be considered the official icon of the country.

The 77 year old statue was recently named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World by the Swiss-based The New Open World Corporation. Last year, the statue was struck by lightning during a massive storm in the city, but fortunately did not succumb to any damage, because soapstone serves as an insulator.

The monument took 9 years to build, and was sculpted by Frenchman Paul Landowski and designed by local engineer Heitor da Silva Costa. Both would be proud to know their work still stands as they created it.

If you go to Brazil, Christ the Redeemer is a must see for any visitor. The city of Rio de Janeiro won't disappoint either.
