The world's tallest man made structure is finally completed, and is open to the public.
The Burj Khalifa opened January 4 2010 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, with a dramatic and spectacular ceremony to recognize the historic event. It's estimated that more than 6,000 people attended the grand opening, including media from around the globe. The ceremony included fireworks, a laser-light show and skydiver display.
The Burj stands at 828 metres, and is 200 metres taller than the world's
second tallest structure, the KVLY-TV mast in North Dakota, U.S. Construction on the project began in 2004.
Besides being the world's tallest skyscraper, the Burj is now the official holder of 13 other records, included the first tallest structure to include residential space, the world's highest mosque (154th floor), and the highest outdoor observation deck, located on the 124th floor. The elevator will also transport you at more than 60km/h.
Formerly called the Burj Dubai, the tower's new name was announced during the inauguration ceremony. It's expected that the Burj Khalifa will be a major tourist attraction for Dubai, drawing many visitors to the city and country in the coming years.
